Lersi - Reussi - Hermit
Lersi - Reussi - Hermit
 |
Only little-known outside Thailand is the statue of Than Lüssi even called Ruessi, Lersi or Hermit. A Lersi sometimes also called Phra Lersi or Than Lersi is a hermit Monk who follows the ancient ascetic teachings. He does not belong to the Sangha (community of monks), but follows the traditional Indian hermits laws. He exercises in asceticism, completely abandoning all earthly things.
Currently in Thailand there are 119 Phra Lersis known by name, but it is assumed that much more are living in leaf huts and caves, especially at the border areas to Laos, Cambodia and Burma. Although the Phra Lersi is no Buddhist in the proper sense, they are highly revered and respected by the population.
The Phra Lersis are herbalists and healers. They strictly live of what nature offers them as food. The obvious signs of a Phra Lersi, are his garment made of tiger skin and a pot-shaped hat. Mostly they are gray-haired skinny men with long beards. According to the ancient Indian traditions, the Phra Lersis got their knowledge from the gods, which they pass only to males from generation to generation. |
